Holocaust History and its Significance in Education for Peace 00-FF-HHS

The course consists of two parts. First, we will deal with the path to the "Final Solution," the historical framework of the rise of Nazism in Germany and World War II.
We will discuss the broad and complex question of how it happened that a modern, Western society turned into a murderous terrorist state, which sowed tens of millions of deaths around it, and built an industrial ideological death system.
We will discuss significant historical phenomena of the twentieth century: the rise of fascism, the collapse of German democracy and the rise of the Nazi regime, the weakness of Western democracies. We will ask about the lessons of history in these aspects: where and how can we identify buds of fascism, the rejection of human rights, hatred of the other, expressions of racism.
We will expand on the expressions of hatred of Jews in German and European culture, the development of a policy of oppression, destruction, and murder towards the Jews: thought and action.
Secondly, we will deal with the Holocaust from the perspective of the victims of Nazi repression and persecution, and we will clarify the broad question of what the Holocaust is for the Jews: what happened to the Jews? What was lost to the Jewish people in those years? As part of the discussion, we will also deal with other groups that have fallen victim to German policy and ask what we learned about a man in general and about a Jewish person in particular in those years.
We will discuss aspects of opposition to German policy: the response of the individual and the reaction of the Jewish public to the policy of oppression: spiritual-cultural-faith responses, mutual aid, underground activity in its various branches, rebellion and fighting
In this context, acts of resistance by individuals and non-Jewish groups will also be discussed. There were many who, despite the reign of terror, sanctified human value.
The course uses archival material. The sources of historiographical knowledge, ways of processing information into a historical picture as well as attempts to deny the historiographical reality of the Holocaust will be discussed
