Forms of Abuse and Neglect Against Children 00-FF-FAN1

The seminar aims to present the outline of the problem of a child abuse within a broad socio-cultural context. Therefore, the following issues will be addressed:
- conceptual issues and terminological distinctions of the child abuse and neglect,
- the issue of a multi-problem family,
- social capital and the role of the local community in preventing child abuse,
- cooperation between services in preventing child abuse (multidisciplinary teams),
- the legal system of preventing family violence,
- typology of barriers in interventions,
- models of informing about suspected child abuse by professionals,
- the principle of the best interests of the child vs. the principle of the good of the family.
- relevance of the Convention on the Rights of the Child and other international legal documents​.
We will also analyze situations of child abuse and violence against children from Latin America, especially diverse forms of exploitation of children: child labour, child marriage, forms of modern slavery, sexual exploitation and abuse, refugee children​, violence at school, cyberbullying, the school in the context of violent conflicts, with a special attention to the situation in Latin America and other peripheral regions​.

Teaching methods:
The topics will be presented in the form of a short introduction, while most of the seminar will be devoted to the active participation of students in the form of interactive exercises, group tasks, discussions; students will be encouraged to apply peer feedback to each other.
