The Concept of Good Living in Different Cultures 00-FF-ICF1
This seminar explores the historical and contemporary significance of Indigenous knowledge and the concept of Buen Vivir (“Good Living”) in Latin America. Students will examine the history of the conquest and colonization in the region, analyzing how these processes led to the marginalization and invisibilization of Indigenous epistemologies. The course emphasizes the importance of Indigenous perspectives on the relationships between humans, nature, and all living beings, offering a critical contrast to capitalist logic, extractivism, and the unsustainable exploitation of natural resources that have shaped much of Latin American history.
Through a combination of readings, case studies, discussions, and collaborative project work, students will investigate Indigenous proposals and practices for ecological stewardship, social cohesion, and community well-being in Latin American contexts. Particular attention is given to how the principles of Buen Vivir, articulated by Andean and other Indigenous cultures, challenge dominant Western development paradigms and offer alternative approaches to sustainability, equity, and collective flourishing. Students will analyze practical examples from Latin American communities and reflect on their relevance to contemporary global debates on social justice, environmental ethics, and alternative models of development. By the end of the seminar, students will gain a nuanced understanding of how Indigenous epistemologies from Latin America can inform ethical engagement, policy, and grassroots initiatives aimed at creating a more balanced and sustainable world.
