Social Exclusion and Poverty 20-2S-SWU

Classes 1-4 are devoted to closer look on phenomena of 'Social Exclusion' and 'Poverty' and indicating that both of these phenomena sometime are strongly correlated but neither one make necessary or sufficient condition - so causal link between both is debatable. The part on 'social exclusion' takes also into account measurement problems - and measures adopted in the Eurostat are discussed.
Classes 5-7 we will go deeper into measurement issues with concentration on such forms of 'Social Exclusion' that are important for contemporary Polish society, such as labor market segmentation, 'shadow economy' and labor precarization.
Classes 8-11 concentrate on 'Poverty' and debates concerning meaning of the term itself. Particular attention will be paid to 'capabilities' theory of poverty, (Sen, Nussbaum).
The final part of the class will address the issues of coping with poverty and - in particular - with the problem of 'poverty cycle' The last tu classes will deal withe the idea of UBI - its history, social justification, rationales and contemporary social experiments.
